The second unit of the Fuqing nuclear power plant in Fuqing city, southeastern China's Fujian province, is expected to start operation and be connected to the power grid in August next year, local authorities said recently. The first unit at the plant was connected to the grid on August 20 this year, with an annual supply of over 7 TWh, which could help reduce standard coal consumption of 2.5 million tonnes and cut carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide emissions by 6 million tonnes and 58,000 tonnes, respectively. The third unit is under installation and is expected to start operation in February 2016; while the fourth unit is expected to be operational in March 2017, according to the provincial state-owned assets supervision and administration commission. The plant will eventually house six pressurized water reactors, including four in its first phase and two in the second phase, with total investment at around 90 billion yuan ($14.66 billion), according to the commission. The plant has a total planned power generation of 45 TWh, and is jointly owned by China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd., Huadian Fuxin Energy Co., Ltd. and Fujian Investment and Development Group Co., Ltd., with stake at 51%, 39% and 10%, respectively. There is another nuclear power station in Ningde city, Fujian province. Its first generating unit was put into commercial operation on April 1 last year and the second unit started operation in May this year.China now has 19 operating nuclear power units and 29 units under construction, ranking it as one of the biggest nuclear power nations in terms of the number of such facilities, according to the National Nuclear Safety Administration in June.
